The RandomStuffGenerator Draft Order Generator randomizes your fantasy sports draft order in seconds. Paste your team names — one per line — choose Standard or Snake draft, set the number of rounds (2–16), and click Generate. The tool returns a shuffled, numbered pick order instantly. Copy the full board with one click and share it with your league. Everything runs in your browser; no account needed.
How to Use the Draft Order Generator
- Enter your team names: Paste or type each team or participant name on its own line in the text box. The tool supports any number of teams — typical leagues use 8, 10, or 12.
- Choose a draft type: Select Standard for a fixed linear order across all rounds, or Snake for a serpentine format that reverses direction each even-numbered round.
- Set rounds (snake only): Use the Rounds dropdown to pick 2–16 rounds. Most fantasy football leagues use 15 rounds; fantasy basketball uses 13.
- Click Generate Draft Order: The tool shuffles your names using a Fisher-Yates algorithm and displays the full draft board immediately.
- Copy your results: Use Copy All to grab the entire board as formatted text, Copy Round on any individual round, or the per-row Copy button for a single team name.
- Regenerate as needed: Click again for a completely new random order — each result is independent with no memory of previous runs.
How the Randomization Works
- Fisher-Yates shuffle: The generator uses the Fisher-Yates (Knuth) shuffle algorithm, which produces a uniformly random permutation. Every possible ordering of your teams has exactly equal probability — there is no bias toward early or late positions.
- Standard draft: The shuffled order is applied identically to every round. The team at position 1 always picks first; the team at the last position always picks last.
- Snake draft: Odd-numbered rounds follow the shuffled order (1 → 2 → 3 … → N). Even-numbered rounds reverse it (N → N-1 → … → 1). This means the team picking last in Round 1 picks first in Round 2, distributing pick advantage fairly across all managers.
- Duplicate removal: If you paste the same name more than once, duplicates are removed automatically before the shuffle so every slot in the draft order is unique.
- In-browser only: All randomization runs locally in JavaScript. No names, results, or session data are sent to any server or stored anywhere.
Snake Draft vs. Standard Draft — Which to Use?
The snake (serpentine) draft is the standard format for most fantasy football, fantasy basketball, and fantasy baseball leagues. It alternates direction each round so that the manager who picks last in Round 1 picks first in Round 2. Over many rounds this evens out the advantage of early picks — getting the 1st overall pick is great, but you then wait the longest before picking again in Round 2.
The standard (linear) draft is used in auction formats, salary cap leagues, or multi-day rookie drafts where pick position is a permanent advantage. If your league is auctioning picks or using a fixed pick-slot system, choose Standard.
Use Cases for the Draft Order Generator
- Fantasy football leagues: Generate a fair randomized draft order for ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper, or NFL.com fantasy leagues. Enter 8–14 team names and use 15 rounds for a standard season roster.
- Fantasy basketball leagues: Set up 10–12 teams with 13 rounds for a standard NBA fantasy draft board. Snake format is the default on most platforms.
- Fantasy baseball leagues: Large rosters require more rounds — use 12 teams and 23–25 rounds for a full MLB fantasy draft board.
- Board game nights and card game drafts: Randomize who picks first when drafting characters, cards, or roles in Drafting games like 7 Wonders or Slay the Spire multiplayer.
- School or office pool picks: Determine the order for NCAA bracket picks, Oscar pool selections, or any office competition where a fair random order matters.
- Tabletop RPG session order: Randomly assign turn order for character creation sessions, campaign slots, or who chooses their class first in a new campaign.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many teams can I enter?
There is no hard limit — enter as many names as your league has teams. Paste a name on each line and the tool handles the rest. Practical fantasy leagues typically run 8 to 14 teams, but the generator works equally well for 4-team or 20-team leagues.
Does the generator remember my previous results?
No. Each click generates a completely independent random order. The tool has no memory of previous runs — closing the tab or refreshing the page clears all results and inputs.
Can I use placeholder names and rename later?
Yes. If your league members haven't set their team names yet, enter placeholders like “Team 1” through “Team 12,” generate the order, copy it, then manually swap in real names on your league platform. The order itself will be the same.
Why does my league platform show a different draft order?
This tool generates a random order independently — it has no connection to ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper, or any other fantasy platform. Use the generated order as your reference and manually enter it into your platform's draft settings, or use it to conduct an offline draft.
