All tools →Random Shape Generator — 21 Geometric Shapes with Live SVG Preview
The Random Shape Generator picks a random geometric shape from 21 shapes across 3 categories and renders it as a live SVG preview in one of 24 named colors. Each result includes the shape name, category, number of sides, interior angle (for polygons), color name and hex code, and a geometry fun fact.
With 21 shapes × 24 colors, there are 504 unique shape-color combinations. Generate up to 5 shapes per click. Free, no signup, runs entirely in your browser.
How to Use the Shape Generator
- Choose how many shapes to generate — 1 through 5.
- Click Generate Shape — the tool picks a random shape and a random named color.
- Read the result — for example, "Hexagon — 2D Polygon, 6 sides, interior angle 120°, Teal (#0D9488)."
- Read the geometry fun fact for each shape to learn something new.
- Use the Copy button per card or Copy All to grab the full text of every result.
- Click Get More Shapes for a fresh batch instantly.
The 3 Shape Categories
2D Polygons — 14 shapes
Closed flat figures made of straight sides. The generator includes every regular polygon from 3 to 10 sides, plus four irregular quadrilaterals:
- Triangles (3): Equilateral triangle (60° angles), right triangle (one 90° angle), isosceles triangle (two equal sides)
- Quadrilaterals (5): Square (90°), rectangle (90°), diamond/rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid
- Regular polygons (6): Pentagon (108°), hexagon (120°), heptagon (≈128.6°), octagon (135°), nonagon (140°), decagon (144°)
2D Curves — 5 shapes
- Circle — infinite sides, every point equidistant from center
- Oval (Ellipse) — two focal points, planetary orbit shape
- Semicircle — half of a circle, inscribed angle always 90°
- Heart — expressible as r = 1 − sin(θ) in polar coordinates
- Crescent — two overlapping circles, appears on 13 national flags
2D Stars — 2 shapes
- Star (5-Pointed) — pentagram, encodes the golden ratio φ, appears on 50+ national flags
- Star (6-Pointed) — hexagram, formed by two overlapping equilateral triangles
Interior Angles of Regular Polygons
The interior angle of any regular n-gon is calculated as (n − 2) × 180° ÷ n. Here are the exact values for each polygon in the generator:
- Triangle: (3−2) × 180 ÷ 3 = 60°
- Square: (4−2) × 180 ÷ 4 = 90°
- Pentagon: (5−2) × 180 ÷ 5 = 108°
- Hexagon: (6−2) × 180 ÷ 6 = 120°
- Heptagon: (7−2) × 180 ÷ 7 ≈ 128.57°
- Octagon: (8−2) × 180 ÷ 8 = 135°
- Nonagon: (9−2) × 180 ÷ 9 = 140°
- Decagon: (10−2) × 180 ÷ 10 = 144°
Use Cases
- Geometry practice — each shape card shows sides, interior angle, and a math fact to reinforce learning
- Art and design inspiration — shapes rendered in 24 named colors spark visual ideas for logos, patterns, and illustrations
- Game and level design — generate random shapes for map tiles, level layouts, or obstacle outlines
- Classroom activities — teachers can generate shapes for student identification exercises or geometry trivia
- Creative writing prompts— "write a story where every object is a hexagon" or "design a character based on this shape"
- Random decision-making — pick a random shape for craft projects, quilting patterns, tile layouts, or graphic design constraints
Frequently Asked Questions
What shapes does the generator include?
21 shapes total: equilateral triangle, right triangle, isosceles triangle, square, rectangle, diamond (rhombus), parallelogram, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, circle, oval (ellipse), semicircle, heart, crescent, star (5-pointed), and star (6-pointed).
How many color choices are there?
24 named colors: Crimson, Royal Blue, Emerald, Amber, Violet, Coral, Teal, Indigo, Tomato, Slate Blue, Sea Green, Hot Pink, Sky Blue, Burnt Orange, Turquoise, Orchid, Olive, Salmon, Navy, Rose, Cyan, Purple, Gold, and Mint. The hex code is shown with each color name.
What is the fun fact about the pentagon?
The regular pentagon encodes the golden ratio φ ≈ 1.618 in the ratio of its diagonal to its side. The U.S. Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia is a regular pentagon with each outer wall spanning 921 feet, and it has five floors, five rings, and five outer sides.
Does the generator work on mobile?
Yes. The generator runs entirely in your browser — no app download, no account, no server calls. The SVG shapes scale responsively and work on any phone, tablet, or desktop.
Are the shapes rendered as images or SVG?
Each shape is rendered as inline SVG — a scalable vector graphic that is sharp at any resolution, loads instantly, and does not require any image files. The shapes scale perfectly on high-DPI (Retina) screens.
