All tools →Random DnD Character Generator — 12 Races, 12 Classes, Full Profiles
The Random DnD Character Generator builds complete D&D 5e character profiles in one click. Each result includes a race-appropriate name, race and class with descriptions, background with skill proficiencies, alignment from all nine options, ability scores assigned using the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) according to the class's optimal stat priorities, hit die and saving throw proficiencies, a background-specific backstory hook, and all four character traits: personality, flaw, bond, and ideal. Filter by any of the 12 races or 12 classes, generate 1 to 3 characters at a time, and copy any result as plain text.
Every detail is manually written and mechanically grounded in D&D 5e rules — not procedurally assembled from random word combinations. The stat assignment reflects actual class optimization (a Barbarian gets STR 15 and CON 14; a Wizard gets INT 15 and DEX 14), and the backstory hooks are background-specific narratives written to give characters a reason to be adventuring.

How Ability Scores Are Assigned
The generator uses the D&D 5e standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) and distributes scores based on each class's optimal priorities. The primary stat receives 15, the secondary stat receives 14, and the remaining four values (13, 12, 10, 8) are shuffled across the other abilities. This mirrors how an experienced player would build the character at the table. The primary stat is visually highlighted in each card. Modifiers are calculated as (score − 10) ÷ 2, rounded down.
Use Cases
- Session prep and NPC creation: Generate complete NPC profiles with stats, backstory, and personality in seconds — a Tiefling Charlatan Warlock has everything a DM needs to play them at the table.
- New player character concepts:First-time players can generate a full character concept — race, class, stats, and story hooks — before opening the Player's Handbook.
- Breaking decision paralysis:When you can't decide between a Dwarf Fighter and a Half-Elf Paladin, generate both and see which backstory resonates.
- One-shot and convention games:Pre-gen characters for Adventurers League or convention one-shots — generate 3 characters, copy them out, and you're ready.
- Party building: Generate 3 characters at once to build a balanced party from scratch — or identify role gaps in an existing party by adding one targeted character.
- Creative writing and fiction:D&D races and classes are iconic archetypes in fantasy fiction. Generate characters for stories that draw on high-fantasy conventions without needing to know the system rules.
- Worldbuilding:Populate a fantasy world's NPCs with varied race/class/background combinations — each one arrives with a plausible reason for being where they are.
- Teaching new players: Show a new player what a Rogue looks like vs. a Fighter — complete profiles make the class descriptions concrete instead of abstract.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this generator based on D&D 5th Edition?
Yes. The races, classes, backgrounds, alignments, ability score array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), hit dice, and saving throw proficiencies all reflect D&D 5th Edition rules. The generator is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast and uses only content that describes the mechanical structure of the game — not proprietary text from the Player's Handbook.
How does the standard array assignment work?
The generator places 15 in the class's primary ability and 14 in the secondary ability. The remaining four values — 13, 12, 10, and 8 — are shuffled randomly across the other four stats. This mirrors how most players manually assign the standard array at the table. A Fighter, for example, receives STR 15 and CON 14; a Wizard receives INT 15 and DEX 14.
What is a backstory hook?
The backstory hook is a 2–3 sentence narrative that explains why the character is adventuring. Each of the 13 backgrounds has 3 unique backstory templates written for that background specifically — an Acolyte's backstory involves temples and divine visions; a Criminal's involves criminal organizations and consequences. The templates reference the character's race and class to make the hook feel specific rather than generic.
Can I use these characters in my D&D campaign?
Yes. Generated characters are yours to use freely — as player characters, NPCs, or inspiration. The stats use the standard array, which is legal in all D&D 5e play including Adventurers League. You'll need to fill in subclass, equipment, and spells separately using the Player's Handbook.
How many unique character combinations are possible?
With 12 races, 12 classes, 13 backgrounds, 9 alignments, 20 personality traits, 16 flaws, 16 bonds, and 16 ideals, the generator produces over 86 million unique character profile combinations — far more than any campaign could exhaust.
Is this generator free?
Yes — completely free, no account required, unlimited generations. The generator runs entirely in your browser with no server calls and no data collection. You can also try the Random Terrain & Biome Generator to build out the world your character inhabits, or the Random Character Generatorfor non-D&D fictional character concepts.
